Folks are finding jobs with twitter

We are still at the top of the first inning in the history of twitter but there are indications that people are using the social networking site to find jobs.

Dan Schawbel, a personal branding expert, described in BusinessWeek how a jobseeker found work by being followed on twitter by his future employer:

Billy Goodnick, a garden writer on Twitter, was followed by the Web editor of Fine Gardening magazine after he developed a loyal Twitter following. Goodnick was then invited to guest blog for the magazine and eventually received a job as a contributor. The moral of the story is that you never know who is going to discover you on social networks and what opportunities might arise just from participating.

Other have benefited from twitter by belonging to a community that acts as an early warning system for new jobs writes Jessica Dickler on CNN.com:

"If it weren't for Jen Harris' followers on Twitter, she would not have been notified of another job opportunity, only moments after getting laid off from Idaho-based MPC computers in October.

As Harris packed up her desk she sent out a tweet that read: "just been laid off from MPC."

"By the time I left the parking lot, I had a job offer from a friend that had a Web development company in town," she said.

Dickler also points out that some firms have rewarded there followers by posting jobs first on social networks:

When the Minneapolis office of Weber Shandwick was looking to hire a junior Web developer, the digital strategy manager, Greg Swan, sent a 136-character tweet to over 2,000 followers which read: "Weber Shandwick Minneapolis looking for mid-level html developer and PSD slicer. Plus you get to work with me. DM or @ me for more info." Doug Hamlin, 23, landed the job after responding with his résumé and information.

Schawbel  sums up nicely the benefits of incorporating social media into your job hunt:

In your job search, social media is the great equalizer. It allows you to connect directly with hiring managers who work for companies you have genuine interest in instead of applying mindlessly through job boards. By being both proactive and reactive on social networks, you're able to be recruited based on your passion, while having access to people who can actually hire you—or at least forward your résumé. As the résumé becomes less and less relevant, you can count on the Web to exploit what you're capable of and help bring your dreams to life!

Think about this.

If you really did find a working formula that made you, say $1,000 a week online on average and it kept producing income no matter what, would you want to sell that idea to a bunch of noobs for $47 a pop and expect to retire on the proceeds? No way, man! It does not compute. It does not add up. And it does not make any sense to do that. I certainly don’t go shouting from the rooftops how I make my money online. Hell, I don’t want the competition taking a slice of my pie and neither would anyone who really does make good cash online.
